A little history:

In the mid-1970s Asheville was a city falling into urban decay. Our downtown resembled a boarded-up ghost town. Businesses had closed or left. The mall was attracting merchants away from the downtown area and the economy was dismal.

During the 1980’s a renaissance began to take place. The identity of Asheville was being reborn. BeleChere brought thousands of local and non-local visitors to the area. Merchants returned. Tourism increased. The culture of our city and our county began to evolve into a vibrant, varied, and visually appealing place.

By 2000, growth in our city and county exploded. Everyone loved Asheville and Buncombe County. We got national notoriety.  Things were good for both locals and tourists.

Something has happened. The Asheville and Buncombe County we came to love has had a second renaissance. This time, however, it was not for the better. The sounds, sights, and smells of happy tourists and prosperous locals have changed. The feeling of pride and satisfaction with our area has and is changing.

We can feel and see the change.  The cost of living in Asheville and Buncombe County has gotten out of reach for many locals. The feeling of safety when you visit our downtown has been replaced by a feeling of fear. The infrastructure we rely on is failing right before our eyes:  Civic center, the parking decks, our local baseball stadium, bridges.  Look at the traffic congestion. Remember the breakdown of the water system during Christmas 2022?  Homelessness is out of control. And things look to be getting worse.

Now is the time for all of us to band together to make Asheville and Buncombe County Strong.

Join us and help protect our home.
